FOX LAKE LIBRARY BUILDING REFERENDUM FACT SHEET The library began in 1939 as a library serving only the Village of Fox Lake. Became a “district library” in 1975 Annexed most of Grant Township in 1976 The library serves most of Grant Township and portions of Antioch and Burton Townships. View map of district. Current Library Building The original building on this site (approx. 1800 sq. ft.) was built in 1967. Over 15,000 square feet were added in 1978, almost all with grant funds. Our main entrance was rebuilt with a partial state building grant in 1995. Population of Library District The current population of the library district is 18,533 persons (2000 census). We estimate that the library district’s service population will double by 2030. Proposed New Library Building Designed by Burnidge Cassell Associates, Architects, Elgin, Illinois A two story building of 40,955 square feet is proposed. View Exterior Drawings and Floor Plan here. Cost of New Library Building Project Estimated project cost is $15,573,590, including construction, furnishings, design fees, etc. The library district is requesting $14,975,000 in building bonds for the project. The estimated taxpayer impact is $94.00 per year on a $250,000 home. Important Facts About the Fox Lake District Library Building Project The Fox Lake Library District has not gone to referendum since 1976. Approximately 90% of the current library building was built without local tax dollars. The site for the proposed new library building (adjacent to the current building) is already owned by the library district. The library would operate in the existing building during construction. Referendum Consolidated primary election, February 5, 2008 There will be one library referendum question: $14,975,000 in building bonds for a new library facility.
